If you phone us, we answer with something like ‘Samaritans, can I help you?’.
You talk, we listen
We listen to you and help you talk through your concerns, worries and troubles. We’ll focus on your thoughts and feelings rather than going into the details so we may ask questions to help explore how you feel.
Ending the conversation
You can end the conversation when you’re ready to.
We won’t tell you what you should do.
We won’t make decisions for you, and we’ll support the decisions you make. You are the expert on your own life. Our advice or opinions are not important.

What to expect

When you phone Lifeline you can talk to a professionally trained counsellor who will listen to you and give you the help and support you need, in confidence.

Lifeline counsellors are experienced in dealing with many issues including trauma, suicide, self-harm, abuse, depression and anxiety.

You can call about anything that may be causing you concern.

The counsellor will explain Lifeline’s confidentiality policy and ask about what is happening in your life. It is entirely your choice whether or not you remain anonymous or share some of your personal details with a Lifeline counsellor.

If you are calling Lifeline to receive urgent crisis support, the counsellor will talk through your options for immediate help. This may include contacting a family member, friend, trusted adult, community worker, GP, social worker, hospital or the emergency services.
